Where blastbeat runs and what each client needs. Every client uses the same account.
Web
Open app.blastbeat.app in a current browser. Sign up there, or log in if you already have an account.
The web app works in a phone browser too. It has a bottom tab bar and sheets in place of side panels.
Desktop
The desktop app is the web app in its own window, with a native shell around it. Builds exist for:
| System | Package | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| Linux | .deb, .rpm, an Arch package and an AppImage, for 64-bit x86 | GTK 4 and WebKitGTK 6.0, which the packages require |
| macOS | A universal .dmg | macOS 12 or later |
| Windows | An installer for 64-bit x86 | The WebView2 runtime, which the installer sets up if it is missing |
A new build is made each night, and only when the desktop app has changed. Each one is signed with minisign, so you can check a download before you open it. The macOS build is not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to approve it the first time.
Logging in opens your browser to finish, then hands you back to the app. On Linux, a Secret Service such as GNOME Keyring keeps you logged in across restarts. Without one, you stay logged in until the app quits.
Capture a Task from any app
Capture is a small window that holds only Quick add. It opens over whatever you are doing, takes one line, adds the Task and gets out of the way. Press Esc to close it without adding anything, or ⇧↵ to add a Task and stay for the next. A Task with no Project goes to the Inbox.
Two things open it:
- The Capture shortcut, Ctrl Alt Space (⌃ ⌥ Space on macOS) unless you change it in Settings › Keyboard, where you can also turn it off. It belongs to the computer you set it on. It works on Windows, macOS, X11, KDE Plasma and GNOME 48 or later as soon as the app runs. On Hyprland it works once you bind it with
global. blastbeat --capture, which opens Capture in the running app, or starts blastbeat and opens Capture if it isn't running. Bind it to any key in your desktop's shortcut settings. It works on every Linux desktop, including niri and Sway, which have no portal shortcuts. Linux launchers also list it as Capture Task.
Capture works only while blastbeat is running. If you aren't logged in, it says so and offers to open the main window.
On Hyprland, bind the command with bind = CTRL ALT, space, exec, blastbeat --capture. Wayland leaves a window's position to the desktop, so float, centre and pin the window whose title is blastbeat | Capture with window rules. The repository's desktop/README.md has the exact lines for Hyprland, niri and Sway.

Choosing a Server
The desktop app ask which Server to use on the Login screen. It is app.blastbeat.app unless you change it.
